The Argument Clinic

quote…

October 15th, 2006

So I started reading moby dick today.  Somehow I never got around to this one, which is kind of odd considering how many books (mostly “classics”) I have read through the years.  Anyways, am reading it for a book discussion group at a local library that I decided to join…4 consecutive weeks discussing the book.  Part of my ongoing attempt to make sure that not everything in my life is somehow engineering-related…you know, to maintain my sanity and all :)

Anyways, came across a really good quote (several actually, but this is the one I am choosing to highlight right now :) ), it is from a sermon that Ishmael hears on the story of Jonah:

“As with all sinners among men, the sin of this son of Amittai was in his willful disobedience of the command of God - never mind now what that command was, or how conveyed - which he found a hard command.  But all the things that God would have us do are hard for us to do - remember that - and hence, he oftener commands us than endeavors to persuade.  And if we obey God, we must disobey ourselves; and it is in this disobeying ourselves, wherein the hardness of obeying God consists.” ~ Moby Dick by Herman Melville

A good reminder.  Back to reading…  Really enjoying it so far….
