The Argument Clinic

crime and punishment, etc…

October 29th, 2007

So I finished crime and punishment the other day, I had only had about 80 pages left for a while but just never had the time/energy to devote to it with everything else going on.  But now that we are at the time of year where we are rapidly losing daylight, I need something to occupy myself with while I do my light therapy so I figured it’s a good time to spend reading books I actually enjoy (i.e. not textbooks).

I enjoyed the book…even though I don’t actually like raskolnikov (main character) until somewhere in the last few paragraphs.  It is an interesting story, with several interesting characters.  So, next on my list in terms of russian classics is brothers karamazov, though not sure when I will get around to it.

This morning I started reading david copperfield, which I have owned for years and never gotten around to reading.  Figured I may as well give it a try now.  Have to say it is a huge relief to read anything where I know the words ‘differential equation’ won’t come up anywhere :)

Yesterday I watched shakespeare’s as you like it (a bbc version that was on pbs years ago that I netflixed), had never gotten around to reading the play but thought it was pretty good.  As usual for shakespeare, in my opinion, I found many of the side characters (especially jacques) more interesting than the main characters.  I also thought the ending was a little odd, though it ended happily obviously (since it’s a comedy and all).  Twelfth night is still my favorite of his comedies.

Finished my midterm for one class last week, have another coming up next week, and am traveling to tampa, fl for a 1 day meeting this week.  So, in other words, I am very busy and very tired…and very much looking forward to the end of this semester!  But I am planning to decorate my apartment for christmas with my mom this friday evening, am looking forward to my apartment looking a little more cheerful than it has of late.

So Gillian posted some more pictures of Iain.  You can see them here and here.

This is my personal favorite from the bunch (he is so little!):

I am going down to visit again tomorrow, will be nice to see them without having to go to the hospital and such.

officially an aunt…

I have been a horrible slacker about posting about this, but can’t really apologize for that because the last week has been crazy and very draining.  That, and I think most of the people who check this site already know anyway.

On Wednesday Oct 10, my sister delivered my nephew Iain James by emergency c-section (5 lbs 10 ounces, 18.5″ long).  He is a cute little guy, you can see photos here.  My sister developed HELLP syndrome, so the situation was very serious on Wednesday morning and we are all very thankful to God for working everything out.  And very thankful that Jim made Gill go to the hospital when she did.  They just got home yesterday and my sister’s blog has more of the details of what the past week was like for her.

Last wednesday I drove down to wappingers at 4:30 in the morning, felt like a long trip cause at that point we weren’t sure how she was doing.  So, to spare my sister having to read what was actually going through my head then (cause she has had a hard enough week as it is), I won’t go into details and will just say that I was very worried, there was a lot of prayer going on, and it was a rough trip for me.  Huge relief when I got to my parent’s and found out they were both ok.  Went to visit them later in the day, but pretty sure my sister doesn’t remember much because she had a lot of morphine that day.  But I felt better seeing that she and the baby were doing ok.  Then I spent friday at the hospital with my mom and gill and helped them out with stuff (which was good, cause the nurses weren’t all that helpful that day).

Then I came back and spent most of the weekend doing homework (cause I have tons of it every week for one of my classes) and then got back to work this week.  Had a nice time at the kulps playing poker and such on sunday night, which I really needed after the week I had had :)

I am really drained from everything and really need to rest, but don’t see that happening anytime soon since I have more homework and midterms coming up.  Oh well…there’s always december…
